Training Philosophy and Approach
I have consistently sought out the highest calibre of training available, with the aim of continually enhancing my expertise as both a driving and teaching professional. My focus has always been on learning from industry experts and my peers, rather than merely acquiring qualifications and certificates. This approach allows me to perform my duties to the utmost of my capabilities.
Understanding ORDIT
The Official Register of Driving Instructor Training (ORDIT) is managed by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) to elevate the standards of driving instructor training. Only training provided by ORDIT-registered trainers and organisations is sanctioned by DVSA. It is noteworthy that registration with ORDIT is currently not compulsory for driving instructor trainers; it remains a voluntary initiative.
Benefits of Training with an ORDIT-Registered Trainer
To achieve ORDIT registration, trainers must:
- Adhere to the ORDIT Code of Practice, encompassing the advertising and sale of training services and customer care.
- Undergo regular assessments of their training delivery by the DVSA to ensure exceptionally high standards.
- Provide training logs and records for evaluation.
- Pay for this voluntary scheme.
The DVSA exclusively recommends and promotes trainers listed on the ORDIT register, underscoring its commitment to quality.
My ORDIT Registration
I am proud to have been registered with ORDIT since its inception in 1998, reflecting my commitment to quality training.
Commitment to Quality Training
Ensuring quality training is essential for adhering to current best practices and maintaining professional standards. The introduction of the Standards Check (SC) in 2014 shifted expectations towards a client-centred approach, rather than one led by instructors. Effective teaching, risk management, and student involvement are now essential for producing responsible, self-aware, and safer drivers.
Value for Money
Regular training to enhance knowledge, skills, and business operations should be viewed as an investment rather than a cost. While the long-term benefits are hard to measure financially, the confidence, self-belief, and motivation it fosters are invaluable. Furthermore, the relationships developed with talented individuals can prove beneficial in future endeavours.
I consistently strive to provide value-for-money training for my clients by understanding their goals and assisting them in achieving their objectives.
Proven Track Record
Over 25 years, I have trained over 600 potential instructors for the ADI Register and more than 200 ADIs to become trainers themselves. This experience has affirmed that continuous improvement is always possible, and many of my clients share this philosophy, often returning for further development training.
Importance of Feedback
Teaching operates within a limited scope where feedback, particularly from students, is infrequent and often delayed. Regular assessments by the DVSA through SCs are crucial in maintaining high standards and ensuring that complacency does not set in.
My Professional Roles
My primary role is assisting instructors in preparing for their DVSA assessments to enhance their teaching efficacy and sustain their businesses. Additionally, I am engaged in:
- Preparing individuals to pass ADI qualifying exams (parts 1, 2, and 3).
- Training ADIs to effectively instruct their own trainees, thereby expanding their schools.
- Preparing ADI trainers for ORDIT inspections.
- Providing remedial training for ADIs and PDIs who have not met SC standards.
- Delivering bespoke, classroom-based courses to groups of ADIs.
- Writing training materials and creating online resources.
- Serving as Chairman of the Harrogate Association of Approved Driving Instructors.
- Acting as a trainer for NDORS (NSAC and NMAC).
Through these roles, I continue to contribute to the advancement of the driver training industry.
